Rajasthan: 50-year-old temple priest set ablaze in Karauli, principal accused arrested

A 50-year-old temple priest was allegedly set on hearth within the Sapotra space in Rajasthan’s Karauli on Thursday. The priest had suffered 50 per cent burn accidents within the assault.

The six assailants, all believed to be land mafia poured kerosene and petrol on the priest and set him afire after he resisted an try by them to encroach upon the land that belonged to the temple authorities. In line with studies, a part of the land was gifted to the priest by the temple authorities and he was developing a home on the plot. 

The priest, recognized as Babulal later succumbed to his severe burn accidents at Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital in Jaipur the place he was admitted after the incidence.

The Superintendent of Police (SP), Karauli, Mridul Kachawa mentioned, the principle accused was arrested inside 24-hours of the incident going down.  The principle accused has been recognized as Kailash Meena.

“Priest Babulal gave an announcement to police within the hospital that few influential folks together with accused Kailash Meena & his sons tried to encroach his land & throughout a dispute accused set the fence on hearth wherein priest received severely burnt,” SP Mridul Kachhwa instructed ANI.


In line with ANI report, the priest within the FIR registered at Sapotra police station had mentioned that he, alongside along with his household, used to do farming on the land throughout the temple premises. Kailash Meena needed to seize the land and on Thursday he had come and was constructing a tent on the piece of land. Upon being stopped by the priest, they burnt a portion of the tent put up within the area, wherein the priest received engulfed and was burnt badly.

“Just one accused has been arrested for burning the priest. We demand the accused’s complete household concerned on this case must be arrested & police officers must be suspended for inaction. There’s anger in your complete Brahmin group,” ANI quoted priest Babulal’s relative Ramakant Sharma as saying.

In the meantime, the state’s former chief minister Vasundhara Raje has condemned the incident and urged the state authorities to “get up from its slumber and guarantee strict punishment to the culprits.”

“The incident of burning a priest alive in Karauli district’s Sapotra is very condemnable. No quantity of grief is sufficient for this. One factor is evident from this that the best way, wherein Rajasthan’s crime graph is growing, no girl, youngster, senior residents, Dalits, merchants are secure anymore. The state’s Congress authorities ought to get up from its deep slumber and mete out strict punishment to the culprits, guaranteeing justice to the sufferer’s household,” Raje’s tweet, translated in English from Hindi, learn.
