One killed, 5 injured in police firing throughout refugee rehabilitation protests in Tripura

The deceased was recognized as 45-year-old Srikanta Das. Police mentioned 5 others had been critically injured as cops needed to open fireplace on the agitating mob that subsequently attacked the safety forces at Panisagar in North Tripura district. 

“Big contingent of safety forces together with Tripura State Rifles troopers led by senior police officers had been mobilised in Panisagar and Kanchanpur sub-divisions (in North Tripura District) to cope with the explosive state of affairs,” a police official advised IANS on situation of anonymity.

In the meantime, the state of affairs remained explosive in Tripura’s Kanchanpur sub-division for the sixth day. The Joint Motion Committee had known as shutdown for an indefinite interval to protest the Tripura and Central governments’ determination to rehabilitate round 35,000 Reang tribal refugees, who had fled to adjoining Mizoram in October 1997 following the ethnic battle.

The agitations since Thursday prolonged within the close by sub-divisions and districts because the state administrations didn’t take any steps to quell the conditions and maintain any talks with the protesters.
