Elephants at Mudumalai camp examined for Covid-19

Swabs of 28 captive elephants at a camp within the district on Tuesday have been taken for testing, days after a lioness succumbed to COVID-19 and 9 others within the satisfaction examined constructive for the an infection at a Zoo in Chennai. Forest minister Okay Ramachandran ordered samples to be collected from all of the elephants and ship them to the Indian Veterinary Analysis Institute at Izatnagar, Uttar Pradesh for testing, forest division sources stated.

Accordingly, samples of all of the 28 elephants on the Mudumalai camp close to right here had been taken until midday, after making them lie on one aspect and eradicating the swabs from trunk and mouth,the sources stated.

The testing is being completed after a lioness on the Arignar Anna Zoological Park at Vandalur in Chennai died because of coronavirus on Thursday, and 9 of the 11 within the park examined constructive for COVID-19.

A complete of 52 mahouts and 27 kavadis (assistant to mahouts) on the camp have been vaccinated towards Covid-19.

In the meantime, the feeding time of the elephants has been staggered and the mahouts and kavadis are allowed to enter solely after checking their temperature, the sources added.
