Ivo Karlovic of Croatia turned the oldest participant to win an ATP Tour match in a quarter-century, hitting 27 aces Friday evening to beat No. 7-seeded Pablo Andujar of Spain 6-Three, 5-7, 6-Four within the first spherical of the Delray Seashore Open.
Karlovic, who turns 42 subsequent month, is the oldest to win on the highest males’s tour since Jimmy Connors at age 42 in 1995. The victory was the veteran’s first since final February.
No. eight seed Frances Tiafoe defeated fellow American Donald Younger 6-Three, 6-Four.
Qualifier Roberto Quiroz overcame a shaky stretch within the first set to beat American Noah Rubin 7-6 (1), 6-Three.
Quiroz led 5-Three, misplaced serve twice after which rallied, dominating the tiebreaker. The victory was the second profession ATP Tour win for the 28-year-old Ecuadorian, who performed on the College of Southern California.
Quiroz’s uncle, 1990 French Open champion Andres Gomez, performed his ultimate ATP Tour match on the inaugural Delray Seashore Open in 1993.
In different first-round play, American Christian Harrison swept Tomas Martin Etcheverry of Argentina, 6-Four, 6-2. Harrison subsequent performs No. 1-seeded Cristian Garin of Chile.
Bjorn Fratangelo beat fellow American Kevin King 6-2, 6-2; Daniel Elahi Galan of Colombia eradicated Andrej Martin of Slovakia, 6-Four, 6-Four; and Cameron Norrie of Britain drubbed J.C. Aragone of the USA.
